Do you recommend buying jewelry from a closing jewelry store at the mall?
My mom wants to buy a $2,000 ring that has been marked down from $6,000 at a jewelry store that's closing down in the mall, my concern is, is it real? also is this deal too good to be true? all their jewelry is on sale from 50-70% off, is this a scam?

- its not a scam because they are closing. they have to get rid of everything they have. people tend to put their own money into their stores by buying all the products in there. so they are throwing money away if they dont sell the things when they close even if they sell for less than they pain for, they still get mre money than they would if they didnt sel it
- 50-70% off still means they're making a profit if it's a mall store. However, when you're dealing with fine jewelry you have to do your homework - doesn't matter where you're buying from. What gemstones are in the ring - what size and what quality rating(s)? Is it certified - request to see the paperwork. And no, it doesn't count for them to "self certify". What is the metal used? What is the price for comparable rings at a non-mall jeweler (remember, malls typically have lower quality with higher margins than a private jeweler). But, after all that... if she loves the ring and the money isn't an issue...
- I've been in the jewelry business for 20 years and have seen it all. When a jewelry store has a 'Going out of Business Sale' they usually hire a liquidation company to assist with the sale. These liquidation companies have these GOB sales down to a science. They normally mark up the prices on the inventory (which is highly unethical in my opinion) and then have a 60-75% off sale. But here's something that they'll never tell you...the liquidation company brings in ton's of their own merchandise, marked up really high, to have in the sale. So very likely between 25 - 50% of the jewelry in the store is brand new product being sold at double the mfg'ing cost. Seldom will you see exceptional bargains at jewelry stores in the mall, even in GOB sales. My advise is if your mom see's a ring she really likes at this mall store, for her to go look at the ring again and do the following: 1. inspect the ring and the diamonds in a 10X jewelers loupe - make sure the diamond isn't a junk stone 2. see if the diamond has a diamond laboratory grading report (GIA or EGL), which if it is 3/4ct or larger she should insist on 3. write down the carat weight of center diamond, color, clarity, cut grade 4. go to a reputable independent jeweler and compare the price of the ring and quality with the independent jeweler. Then IF it is a good quality ring, at a good price, then she should buy it. But don't buy it just because it is 60% off. There is lot's of junk being sold at mall jewelry stores at big discounts. But after you get the 60% off, you still have junk. Hope this helps.
